Montag asks him for help when he comes interested in reading books. Also at the beginning of the book, Clarisse and Montag are having a conversation of him being a fireman and the smell of kerosene.
This part seems as if Montag was already planning in become an individual and thinking for himself. Montag being the protagonist of this novel influence the book because he as made a change in life, but he learns that there is no escape from the past The New York Times.
Mostly his new decision to change was caused by Clarisse and her way of thinking. Her curiosity and talks were different than the others. Montag liked that about her, she was not afraid of what the world might say about her.
It made him want to be like her, to think like her, and to be curious like her. This quote that Montag said emphasizes that Clarisse was just an individual who wanted to help and see the world different without harm.
Others just saw her as a threat because she will rot other mind like Beatty responded. The government goes after Montag because he has gone against the belief of conformity. Individuality sets one self apart from others, as Montag decided to make a change from conformity he leads to a group of outcast who have become like him and settles with them.
Granger says at the end of the book that the war will stop and it will be the books the one who stop it Smolla.
